Background of the study:
Traditional moral education in Afikpo South has long been a cornerstone in shaping adolescent behavior, transmitting ethical values, social norms, and cultural wisdom. Rooted in indigenous practices, moral education encompasses storytelling, proverbs, and communal rituals that guide behavior and instill a sense of responsibility (Okoro, 2023). In the face of modern influences, traditional moral education remains a vital source of guidance for many adolescents, serving as an antidote to the challenges of contemporary society (Nwosu, 2024). However, rapid modernization, urban migration, and exposure to global media are reshaping the mechanisms through which adolescents learn moral values. This study evaluates how traditional moral education influences adolescent behavior in Afikpo South, examining the methods employed by elders and community leaders to impart values such as respect, honesty, and communal solidarity (Chinedu, 2025). It further explores the interplay between traditional moral teachings and modern educational systems, providing a comprehensive analysis of their combined impact on youth behavior and social integration (Ibe, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
There is growing concern that traditional moral education in Afikpo South is being undermined by modern influences, leading to behavioral changes among adolescents. The erosion of customary ethical instruction may contribute to a decline in respect for communal values and increased social discord. Limited research has focused on the extent to which traditional moral education shapes adolescent behavior. This study seeks to address these gaps by investigating the impact of indigenous moral teachings on youth behavior and the challenges of preserving these practices amid modern influences (Ekwueme, 2023).

Significance of the study:
This study is significant for its contribution to understanding how traditional moral education shapes adolescent behavior, offering practical insights for educators and policymakers in preserving cultural values while addressing modern challenges. Its findings will support the development of integrative educational programs (Onyema, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to examining the role of traditional moral education in shaping adolescent behavior in Afikpo South Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on indigenous teaching methods and their impact. It does not extend to other aspects of moral or academic education.
